Adopting eco-friendly IT policies is becoming the "only option" for many firms in the current market, it has been claimed.
The assertion comes from business technology consultancy IT Governance, which claims that increasing power efficiency comes with threefold benefits of cutting costs, promoting better working efficiencies in general and meeting ethical demands.
Alan Calder, chief executive of IT Governance, says: "Many global companies now view green initiatives as necessary to staying competitive, quite a change from the views of yesteryear."
He adds that businesses are now beginning to realise that there exists the potential to "make long-term savings and increase operational efficiencies" by shifting to greener working practices.
The organisation predicts that the credit crunch, environmental legislation and pressure from consumers are all among the factors likely to increase interest in green IT equipment in the coming months.
Mr Calder formerly advised small businesses to make protecting against cyber attacks their "number one priority" in light of the exposure to risk that such organisations currently face.
