Programme Management - Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®)
Through this website you can access information about 'Managing Successful Programmes' (MSP®), the best practice methodology for programme management.
IT Governance is also the industry leader for information, books, critical management resources, manuals, training resources and self-paced online training products that are related to MSP.
Programme Management
Delivering on an organisation's strategic goals can often be complex. Using programme management principles can be useful in achieving these goals by breaking down the individual tasks into groups (programmes) and then into smaller chunks (projects). But how do you manage and organise programmes?
The answer is simple: use a best practice method such as MSP.
What Can MSP Deliver?
MSP is a best practice method for programme management that enables organisations to coordinate, direct, implement, and manage a portfolio of projects that deliver a desired outcome.
It helps:
- Plan projects to support the programme
- Deliver projects on time and on budget
- Define responsibilities and lines of communication
- Break down initiatives into clearly defined projects and offer a framework for handling them
- Involve interested stakeholders
- Manage risk and ensure the programme responds to change
- Audit and maintain quality
MSP is designed to be used with the UK Cabinet Office's other PPM methodologies, PRINCE2®, M_o_R®, MoV™, MoP™ and P3O®.
How Does MSP Work?
MSP is design to work alongside the other PPM methodologies in the Cabinet Office suite of methods. But how does it specifically work?
It will help you to:
- develop a clear view of the programme's aims and identify its benefits;
- define the programme and show how it will affect and change the organisation;
- create a strong framework for monitoring and coordinating the various projects within the programme;
- ensure the programme moves forward;
- manage the impact of the programme on the organisation;
- close the programme, ensuring it has achieved its ends and its successes are acknowledged.
Who Uses MSP?
MSP is a widely applicable methodology for programme management. It is used globally in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Organisations which use the methodology include Barclays and GlaxoSmithKline.
MSP Resources for Individuals and Organisations
The core resource for MSP is, of course, the 2011 edition of the MSP manual, Managing Successful Programmes - 2011 Edition (which is available in softcover, Adobe eBook and annual online subscription formats).
MSP Qualifications and Self-Paced Online Learning
The APM Group runs the MSP accreditation scheme on behalf of the UK Cabinet Office. There are currently three levels of MSP qualification:
- MSP Foundation
- MSP Practitioner
- MSP Advanced Practitioner
Examinations take place at Accredited Training Organisation training events worldwide or at APM Group open centres in the UK. MSP exams can also be sat at certain branch offices of the British Council worldwide.
All MSP Practitioners and Advanced Practitioners have to re-register their qualifications with APM Group every three to five years to maintain their qualifications by sitting a Re-Registration exam.
